SEDATIVE FILLING

What is a SEDATIVE FILLING?

When you have a cavity that is in proximity to the nerve (pulp) of the tooth, but the symptoms you experience are provoked only by a cold beverage or while chewing, the doctor might consider doing a medicament or sedative filling.

The purpose of this type of filling is to remove the cavity and also apply a medicine to the tooth to asses the recovery of the nerve of the tooth.

For the sedative filling we use a local anesthetic to thoroughly numb the tooth. Once the cavity has been removed and cleaned; the doctor will apply a medication to the tooth and place a temporary filling.

The doctor will keep the tooth under observation for approximately 1 month; before placing a permanent filing.

What if my sedative filling hurts?

It's normal to experience some sensitivity to heat, cold and pressure after your appointment. You can also expect some soreness in your gums for several days. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help to alleviate discomfort and swelling. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water, and then gently swish the water around the tooth and spit.

If the soreness or sensitivity lasts for more than a week, please call our office. Prolonged symptoms might indicate that the nerve of the tooth treated has been irreversibly affected and might need endodontic treatment (Root Canal).

Do I have to be careful with my sedative filling?

The doctor will place a white temporary filling; this filling is meant to last approximately 1 month; and you should avoid any extreme temperatures as well as eating hard or chewy food.

If your bite feels uneven, or if you have any questions or concerns about your new filling, be sure to give us a call.
